Camping and Fishing for King Salmon on the Little Susitna River + Video

Alaska king salmon are a prized catch among anglers and the Little Susitna River in the Mat-Su Valley is our destination to try to catch one.  We are taking a fishing charter that conveniently starts from the Little Susitna Public Use Area [also known as Burma Landing] where there is a boat launch with a nice little campground for our motorhome.

Unfortunately, king salmon numbers are not as strong as they once were, making the prize even greater.  I have always wanted to return to the Little Susitna River, back in 2007 I guided anglers there to catching their own king salmon.  Did you know that I have never reeled in a king salmon myself?  It may sound ironic, especially since I was an Alaska fishing guide for years.  Surprisingly, there are many captains and guides that never get to go fishing on their own.

A Wildfire Changed Our RV Plans + Video

As we headed north on the Parks Highway, a distant hue of smoke on the horizon turned into a smokey fog on the other side of Wasilla.  The plan was to take our RV to Nancy Lake State Recreation Area for some workamping (working + camping), fishing, and kayaking.  Well that was the plan, but there was a wildfire burning 25 minutes up the road closing the highway and our campground was only 10 minutes from the frontlines.

We decided to see how far we could get up the highway before it was closed. Not far.

An ATV Ride to Knik Glacier + Video!

One of our favorite summer activities is riding the ATV ride to Knik Glacier.  It is a 50 mile (round trip) journey through woods, across rivers, and up to the glacier.  This was our third year and third time making the trip.

Be prepared to get muddy and dusty on this trip.

Epic Flightseeing in Kenai Fjords National Park with Video

Flying happens to be my favorite way to see the beautiful country that surrounds our lovely little town by the sea.  My grandpa was a pilot and I was up flying in his Cessna 180 taildragger before I had even started walking.
