Our first couple days were spent reuniting with an old friend Aydin and his wife Hilal.  I met Aydin at the Anchorage International Hostel back in 2006 after completing my fishing guide school.

I was spending a few days in Anchorage before heading back home, Aydin was visiting the United States, and Hiroshi was starting a bicycle trip from Alaska to the tip of South America.   We exchanged email addresses and went our separate ways.  After a couple emails shortly after meeting, neither Aydin or myself heard from Hiroshi again.  We only hope he is safe and finished his journey.  Aydin and I  regularly emailed through the years which over time turned into Facebooking.

Aydin and Hilal really made us feel at home.  They cooked traditional meals and showed us around parts of Istanbul not regularly visited by tourists.  We had a great time together!

Our final meal was hosted by Aydin’s mother, Leman.  She told her friends Alaskans were coming over for dinner!  It was hard to tell which one of us was more excited to be sharing a meal together.

The first couple days in Istanbul felt like an Anthony Bourdain travel show.  Aydin, Hilal, and Leman thank you for your warm hospitality.

On Sunday night we met up with our friends and business partners for an week of good times in Istanbul.

The following morning our first stop was the Grand Bazaar, where somebody quickly caught the shopping bug.  Then we proceeded to visit the Blue Mosque.
